Fresh Meat Market

Fresh meat market in the heat of the night, commodities being traded like hot stocks off the wall on a busy KLSE trading day. 'Brokers', on standby to receive orders from discreet men who have come from as far as Klang, keep themselves busy with the constant shuffling of photo cards, from either "Occupied" to "Available" to "Off Day". Pick a number quick, and go into the assigned room with your order.

So, will it be "Normal" or "Bukak" for you today?

How to finish a RM16.90 Golden Fried Rice from Causeway Bay, Low Yatt

1. "Oh gosh! Do I have this all to myself?"
2. "Spread it out a little and it looks even more unachievable now!"
3. "I think I'm up to my neck already!"
4. "Stuff this last prawn down and I want no more of this stuff!"
5. "Help! I feel paralysed from the neck down!"

Depression Sets In

Depression sets in, on a disturbing wee hours of a Monday morning. Weekend’s come and gone, and my heart races faster as I run down a list of things I absolutely need to do: more albums for my photography site (the traffic is dwindling), my Thai lessons (why am I still at the 18th lesson), the few e-books that I have downloaded and printed but yet to touch, workout (the 8-minute abs exercise is working fine, but I need to do more), playing the piano (the keyboard is collecting dust again) yet don’t get me started on work. I dread to add anymore. Don’t understand what’s with the constant rush. I stare hard at the ceiling, not a wink of sleep, and worry sick about the fact that I am only here in this world for the tiniest fraction of time, and this me won’t even be around to worry about anything anymore when the time comes. Grab my phone and start a frantic search of phone numbers and SMS’s to delete. I thought I’m liberated, never mind the shivering hands, but each step only make me sink deeper. And it’s ok if my job doesn’t bring me places anymore. I think I’m beginning to enjoy disappointment. It helps manage my expectations, don’t fly too high, don’t venture too far, stay put in my own cocoon of contentment, maybe the pain in my chest will go away. Images of Mum having meals alone, why are these haunting me again? She knows! She finally knows! I peel my finger nails, peel them hard enough to feel the pain, and I recall the last time I feel these piercing emotions, never too long ago, countless ones too, but I don’t remember the last time I cry. In and out of the pit, I’m going crazy.

On Any Pathetic Saturday Night

On Any Pathetic Saturday Night, a group of bubbly sisters make an appearance at Dome, Lot 10. Joining them is the rest of the 80% gay customer crowd, each with their usual pink circle. Flaunting the latest fashion, the best make-up, and the most perfect hair-do, the War of Glances heats up as the gay occupancy rate climbs further to 90% and beyond.

Conducted in a multitude of improvisations, it ranges from incessant checking on the magazine racks (just an excuse to allow for the head to turn and catch the charming object that just have to sit at the most inconvenient of angles), or discreet yet carefully spaced out stares of passing objects on the walkway, or long overdue looks that stubbornly linger on to the outlines of objects sitting within convenient ranges of the eyes and neck.

Peals of laughters and a multitude of noises choke the air amidst the soothing cafe music, yet the War of Glances remain well within its dark and quiet vacuumed space. It is an agenda hidden behind the thick curtains of a play in its glorious replay in front of admiring audiences. The undercurrent of hope (to see) and desire (to be seen) is too overwhelming, such as every action is carefully cheorographed, each expression carefully manufactured and each reaction carefully studied and processed.

Yet, the exchange of chemistry, as subtle as they may be, almost never materialise into anything beyond the War of Glances. Feelings are internalised and emotions are carefully shefted into the darkest corner of the universe, for any hint of self-initiated admiration is a testimony of vulnerability, leading to possible side-effects such as a bruised ego.

The War of Glances are fought with minimal water consumption, as it takes a 2-3 hour experience to reduce full glasses of fruit juice or coffee to empty containers that immediately become the target of enthusiastic waiters who waste no time in zapping them away from the table. Tuck the soul back into the safe enclave of the heart as the bill arrives, and the War of Glances draws to a close.

On Any Pathetic Saturday Night at Dome Lot 10, who says this is about catching up with buddies over a cup of ice mocha?

Hushabye Mountain

The soothing music fills the air as I take a deep breath and close my eyes. Imagine now I am on a time machine, traveling back to where it all started. Look out the window to see images flitting past in blinding speed; images of people whom I have come to know, and experiences that I have come to live. Most will blur into an unrecognizable pattern of hues and colours, but some will stay on for the longest of time, for better, or for worse.

A gentle breeze from hushabye mountain
Softly blows o'er lullaby bay
It fills the sails of boats that are waiting
Waiting to sail your worries away

Track 01:
The first meeting at Wangsa Maju LRT station turned out to be the start of a 4-year long relationship. What would I do without you?

Track 02:
Mr MD holding me close in his arms under the umbrella as we brave the rain at busy Bukit Bintang. The memories will linger on, coz I have got your perfume.

Track 03:
I said ‘Hi’ to a dark figure that had been following me for the whole night in Lost World. I remember asking if you liked me, the silence that followed was deafening.

It isn't far to hushabye mountain
And your boat waits down by the key
The winds of night so softly are sighing
Soon they will fly your troubles to sea

Track 04:
You stopped at the stairway before leaving Babylon, and waved frantically for my attention. I miss you, Nop. Can I hear you sing ‘Happy Birthday’ in Thai again?

Track 05:
Steamy sessions in the car on the rainy wee hours of Saturday mornings. Did we say we will progress to somewhere more comfortable?

Track 06:
Passionate kissing in the open showers for all to see. I think we can get rich if we charge.

So close your eyes on hushabye mountain
Wave goodbye to cares of the day
And watch your boat from Hushabye Mountain
Sail far away from lullaby bay

Track 07:
Standing on the bustling agogo street with a stalk of rose and a pink balloon poodle in my hand. I will come back for you soon, I promise.

Track 08:
Squeezing amongst heaps of copulating bodies on a Full Moon Party in Towel Club. Every move I made resulted in contact with either a well-built chest, firm butts or a eager hard-on. But why was I not excited?

Track 09:
Lying on the beach at Datai on a breezy late evening, you wrapped yourself around me and fell asleep. Too much wine for dinner, I know.

Track 10:
Stood in front of a fully occupied lift at the office lobby as it closed on a busy Monday morning. I looked at you looking at me. Waited half a year before we did more than looking, but this only made the whole experience more fulfilling.

The Dinner at Cafe Cafe

The flickering candlelight blinded my vision temporarily, but your gleaming sincerity shone right through. I flipped through the CD book of the couple of Thai Pop CDs that you got me from Bangkok, and then you handed me a pouch with some pendants inside, personalized with my name, initials, and birthdays. Couldn’t help but felt a tinge of uneasiness as your close friends dining in the next table popped in and out of our conversation, or watched us closely from their tables, like nervous parents scrutinizing every action of the new suitor on the block. Thought I was unsuitably underdressed for the occasion. Then I watched in amusement as you tapped clumsily on your mobile phone, and made a mental note to teach you T9 input next time. Listened to more Thai pop in the car while I drove you home, you said you’ll introduce me to your lover of 20 years in due time.

In due time...

Nice to see you again, Mr Philosophy Men.

Desperate Old Men

Desperate old men, hiding in the darkest corner of the dark room, like starving tarantulas, waiting to pounce on the next unsuspecting meat that wanders into their territory. Their skills, horned to perfection from an age-old practice, ensure that the helpless victims, struggle as they may, are juiced dry, yet only the most horniest of all dare to venture thus far.

Desperate old men, alternating amidst the piles of copulating bodies, lending a helping hand (and often, tongue too) to further stimulate the anatomy to reach an ever-heightened pleasure. Rejection are common, but if they are lucky, these climatic events will temporarily disengage all mental processes of the occupied ones, thus allowing easy access to the heavenly bodies that are normally out of reach for them.

Desperate old men, standing since time immemorial at the open showers, like hungry vultures circling the sky waiting for their next meal, openly staring at weary bodies engrossed in the washing away of fresh evidences from passionate sessions upstairs. Visual contacts sometimes irresistibly turn more physical, but the culprits who expertly sneak a pinch or two on the buttocks are always hard to apprehend.

Desperate old men, wandering about the corridors in front of the rows of empty cubicles, like a peacock in the midst of a mating dance, waiting for eager suitors to come along, but their withering feathers have long expired their charm. Out of desperation they might coerce and pull, but outside their glittering careers and high-profile social life, they are defeated by the one thing money and success cannot buy: youth.

Desperate old men, making the last attempt to land a kill while changing into your Sunday golf attire or after office hours workout attire, and returning to your beloved family as a loving father and to your colleagues as a respectable leader. Hand over the locker keys at the counter and start recalling the outcome of an important meeting this morning, but how do you deal with the sad realisation of the long-lost appeal?

Welcome to Mirage, desperate old men. See you again next week.

I Know What Your Lover Did Last Sunday

We were sitting on the bench at the outdoor garden catching our breath and getting ready to leave when my wandering eyes caught hold of a familiar face. The dwindling blood supply to my brain failed to help me execute a quick recall to this face with a name, allowing the owner to dive straight for the gym hoping that somehow my tired eyes would have failed to register the short encounter.

Out of sight, was indeed not out of mind. I searched hard towards the most remote wildnerness of memory-scape, and came up with a name 5 seconds later. Then, the next 3 minutes was spent overcoming the excitement of bumping into my gay sister’s lover in a gay sauna. As I sat there contemplating my next move, Roy who had better luck locating him came back to confirm the breaking news of the year.

Over a period of 20 minutes, we kept a close watch on him from a distance, carefully balancing between not being far enough to loose sight of him, and not being too near, so as not to be too overwhelming that it would be awkward for him to cruise or be cruised upon.

But I saw tension and anxiety building up on his face, as he struggled to face the unimaginable consequences of having his secret Sunday evening agenda exposed to you. Yes, you, the big sister among our little queer circle, the one whom we need to thank for the nevertheless vivid, fun memories of our initial closet days. Higher on your lover's priority list now was most probably how to manage his exposure to us, rather than to catch the gorgeous boy who was just stripping into his birthday suit at the locker next to him.

Roy and I finally took a break from the spying job, and to our surprise, he somehow summoned enough courage to approach us and said hi. He certainly had strategised, for from the third sentence onwards, he started to subtly implant the virtues of friendships into our conversation. Good friends, according to him, are those that would hold back facts from their beloved buddies that would prove too hurtful to bear. If there were anything too hurtful to bear, it would be his facial expression, distorted with fear and red with intense anxiety. And so, not wanting to incur further pain to this poor soul who was ready to kneel and beg in front of me, I told him I had deleted your contact number, thus there is no way of you ever finding out about this encounter from us.

And I thought I heard a big sigh of relief.

Loy and I left shortly after, leaving him to roam the darkened and almost deserted rooms and walkways on a late Sunday night.

So the most perfect gay marriage of the century is not a bed of roses after all. The fairy tale story that you had so tirelessly and painstakingly weaved for our envy is all but a fairy tale? The one man you have sacrificed your money, time, energy and friends for was just begging us not to reveal the truth to you, and most probably was now fucking other boys in Mirage while you continue to live your life in perfect and blissful oblivion.

I wanted to taste the sweetness of victory relating this story to you, and watch you shrivel away as your perfect world come crashing down, but darn, I thought presenting this with an impressive line-up of evidences, including grainy photos from camera phones with him in action would be more convincing.

No?

A Tinge of Loneliness

  • A tinge of loneliness I felt, as I struggled to remove myself from the entangled mass of copulating bodies in heightened crave on a Full Moon Party. Got bruised in the arm as I freed myself from an overzealous uncle, but I thought it helped lessen the pain in my heart.
  • A tinge of loneliness I felt, as Eddie and I stepped out of Towel Club into the deserted streets at 4am, and took a slow walk back to our hotel in Chinatown in the breezy night air. All the experiences in the sauna, however exciting or boring, inspiring or embarassing, will now be reduced to memories as the door swinged shut.
  • A tinge of loneliness I felt, as I read the SMS from Loy. He was at the beach at Hua Hin. I replied asking him to please take care of himself. Did a quick check on the message before sending it out and prompty deleted the word 'baby'. Got used to this term when addressing each other over the past four years. That needs to change now.
  • A tinge of loneliness I felt, as I sent one last SMS to Ben. Whatever happened to the planned rendezvous I don't know. But all I can tell is his reluctance to extend a warm shoulder for me to cry on when I needed one the most, and that all I will be to him, is an existence separated from his lover and close friends, and thus only qualifies his attention as the clock strikes 12am. I hope he was able to cancel his leave.
  • A tinge of loneliness I felt, as I watched palm oil trees flitted past while munching Seremban Siew Pau in the bus back to KL. Took a minute to list down my regrets while Eddie giggles to Chow Sing Chi’s absurbly humorous antiques in an old production.
  • A tinge of loneliness I felt, as I pulled up the sheets during bedtime and turned to look at the empty bed next to me. Replied a few ‘Good Night’ messages, and turned off the lights.

Struggling..

  • Struggling for love (Futile attempts of locating love in Mirage, but all I found was lust, when will I ever learn? No more diligent checking of hearts in Fridae, no more aimless search of compatible nicks in Gay.com and MIRC, but where have all the good men gone to?)
  • Struggling to be a better son (No more guilt pangs of seeing Mum on the sofa in the living room, staring into thin air, or watching age-old chinese serials on Astro)
  • Struggling to be a better friend (Deleted names in my phone contact list, whom I know I meant very little to, or meant very little to me. Friends should live for the challenge of being mutually inspiring, and encouraging, not just for pathetic exchanges of beauty tips, fashion talk, and sex & gossip chats)
  • Struggling for career (No point watching the ERL zoom past me every morning when I'm not on it, 20 more years to visit the 188 places I must go before I die, but I'm doing nothing about it now.)

Goodbye Chua

  • You to Me: (stupid April Fool's joke)
  • Me to You: "You are?"
  • You to Me: "Have you changed your phone recently?"
  • Me to You: "Nope, but I have reviewed my contact list and deleted all the names whom I do not have the slightest idea of who they are anymore, or the other way round."
  • You to Me: "Well, let me tell you who I am. I am your ... "
  • Me to You: (no reply)
  • You to Me: "Dearie, another half an hour more for April Fool's.."
  • Me to You: "So are you going to disappear again, only to send me another joke next April Fool's?"

Goodbye Jerry

  • Goodbye the tattoo on your back (why put a chinese character when all you speak is English?)
  • Goodbye the base note of Issey Miyake off your neck (even though it will never smell the same on mine)
  • Goodbye the last hug you gave me in Mirage (I thought you asked me to bring you home?)

Good Night Mr MD

I remembered most vividly the walk with you from the hotel lobby to Shooks. There was only the slightest of drizzle, but you insisted on taking the umbrella along. For the full three minutes, our world was confined within the tiny zone beneath the coverage. You casually wrapped your arms around my back, hand landing on my shoulder. You had the umbrella inclined towards me, and I had to come closer to try and keep you dry too. And then I caught your Men 212 again.

I thought I noticed a Caucasian lady glancing our way, and then quickly looked away. You didn't seem to mind at all, perhaps the thought of being 333km down south (away from the 3,000 odd employees in your plant) was comforting enough.

Dinner's conversation revolved around your life stories, your life philosophies and in particular your gradual climb up the corporate ladder, as you pinched slices of meat that I had cut out from the outrageously large chunk of steak on my plate. Sorry I stopped you from talking a few times, I needed my appetite if I were to keep my promise of finishing my dinner, and the fact that I was loosing it (listening to someone who sounded very close to my manager) was not helping.

But thank goodness you did not sound like him when we were in bed.

You showed me your name card (even though I had not, in any occasions at all, doubted your words), and then the new LV wallet that you got just in the afternoon (I was struggling to find the coins compartment and the logo, but only saw an extensive collection of credit cards in various shades of gold and platinum), and then you went on to share with me a step-by-step instructions on assembling a HGA (used in all magnetic disk storage technology). I had to stop you from telling me your monthly salary.

I waited at the sofa while you went to the desk to get my parking ticket chopped. I thought you felt uncomfortable being seen with me by the hotel staff? As you were walking me to the carpark lift, you asked if I will miss you, and I answered 'Yes' immediately.

Good night Mr MD, I hope I did a good job in reaffirming your various life successes.

Suddenly Sunday

2:45am on an early sunday morning. Forgot how the whole Saturday went passed. I think I watched a movie. Must remember to bring AhSa for carwash tomorrow, and drive over to Citibank to settle the bill. We have not been bringing Mum out lately, shall think of a nice place for dinner. Updated my journal and I can't seem to fall asleep.

Am I really loosing you?

Anatomy Of A Change Of Heart

1/ I turned around only to see you in his arms. Perhaps the stuffy environment warranted a mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.

2/ He gave you a farewell hug and kiss as we bid farewell in Suriwong. Guess the session you had with him earlier at the sauna was too intense, and the thought of not being able to feel each other again for a long time, too distressing to bear.

3/ You left me alone at the departure lounge to get to a public phone for a farewell phone call to him. Guess an SMS just won’t do.

4/ I could almost feel your aching heart as we prepared for take off. You said it’s the same emotions you felt many years ago, when you bid farewell to me in Pudu Raya to catch a bus back to Singapore for work. Did we hug and kiss too? I could not recall.

5/ You went downstairs after dinner to get a calling card. You did your calculations and concluded that the rates are 80% cheaper. Put on the headphones as you play and replay the telephone conversations you recorded on the mobile.

6/ Did you say you’re going back to Bangkok again to see him, only him? Thanks for calculating my annual leave balance for me, and concluding that since I only had two days left in my pot, I would not be able to join you. You said you will buy me some t-shirts from Chatuchak, you have to work harder on those half-hearted offers.

Did you asked if I would be sad/angry if you really go? Does my answer really matter?

A Potpourri of Queer Emotions (Fr My Bangkok Trip)

EMBARASSED
9pm on a Saturday night at Babylon sauna, standing in front of the open air dining area together with hundreds of others waiting for the foam party to start. Clad in just our swim trunks (I wrapped a towel around for added protection), we started dancing to the disco music, our skin itching to be soaked in industrial foam that would fall from foam-maker machine hung above the enclosed area, like mania from heaven, dehydrating every inch of our skin. Desmond suddenly appeared next to me, and I told him in Cantonese that I think the guy standing in front of me is cute. He told me softly that this guy speaks our language.

SPOILT
10am on a Saturday morning in Babylon barracks. I rushed out to the common washroom in just my towel. I was an hour late for the Chatucak shopping trip, but then my sisters would most probably thank me for allowing them extra time at helping themselves to the gorgeous ‘breakfast spread’ up on the reception level. Slapped an inch of facial wash cream on my face, and started feeling around for the longest of time for the tap to turn on the water. Damn the design! How are we supposed to complete our facial regimen with one hand constantly pressing on the tap for the water? As I was struggling, I felt a hairy hand on the tap, and then a giggle as I recoiled from the surprise. Wiped the facial wash off my eyes and found a Habate (Ang Mo, or Caucasian guy) standing in front of me. He kept his hand firmly on the tap for a full two minutes until I completed the whole routine. I gave him a nice hug and the sweetest smile I could conjure up before returning to my room.

AMUSED
You took the empty seat on my left and immediately wrapped your right hand on my body. It was a Saturday night at the agogo boy bar. Even though the show had ended, there were many patrons lingering around still. Somehow you couldn’t find anyone else to attack. I was now the centre of attraction for my sisters as I struggled to turn down your advances politely, but it grew more persistent from kisses on the face to fondling of my nipples, to free sex offers and attack of my manhood (of which had grown soft from the unwanted attention, and you wondered if I was even gay). Lily said since the tables had turned and I seemed to be your agogo boy instead, I should now charge the drinks on you. Khob Khun Krab!

HEARTBROKEN
We arrived at the Newman agogo boy bar to a full house seating. The sofa seats lining the walls were fully occupied. As the mamasan scurried around to find us seats, I felt you touched my hands softly. Didn’t matter you were clad in just your white undies with a semi erection underneath, you had the most sincere and decent smile in the length and breath of Suriwong street. We were forced to take the bar seating right on the edge of the raised dance pool, where the performance will take place. As I sat there sipping my Coke and watching the show, you stood quietly behind me, both arms locking onto my body in a tight embrace. I’m sorry I did not buy you a drink (I only had enough money left for the airport tax tomorrow), I’m sorry I did not ask you to sit down (there were no empty seats around me), I’m most sorry I could not take you out for the night (I was sharing the room with my bf). But you held on nevertheless for the full 90 minutes, oblivious to the countless stares of admiration from the other patrons. On our way out, you slipped a pink balloon poodle and a stalk of rose into my hand, careful not to catch the attention of the outrage mamasan. I turned back at the entrance in time to see you disappeared into your world once more.

Heartbroken (Based on "The Potpourri of Queer Emotions")

The five of us arrived at the Newman agogo boy bar to a full house seating. The sofa seats lining the walls were already fully occupied. There were curious straight couples here for the promise of the most outrageous unnatural sex acts in the world, groups of queer folks here to witness sexual poses wilder than their 50 people gang bang sessions in Towel Club, and a few uncles here to catch one of the boys to brush their egos and prove yet again that this Earth is worth their existence for at least another night.

As the mamasan scurried around to find us seats, I felt you touched my hands softly. Didn’t matter you were clad in just your white undies with a semi erection underneath, you had the most sincere and decent smile in the length and breath of Suriwong street. The patrons behind were pushing us in, you reluctantly let go of my hands, but our eye contact locked on to each other stubbornly.

We were forced to take the bar seating right on the edge of the raised stage, where the performance will take place. I looked up and found a huge bulge staring at me. It was 15 minutes before the show begins, but there were already boys on the stage, each clad similarly in white undies and a round number plate for easy identification. As they made their turns on the stage, some began to dance to the deafening music, while others stood still and look around to check for approval eyes from amongst the patrons.

“I like you.” The voice came through loud and clear, echoed through my auditory canal into my inner ear before registering in my brain. Perhaps you had placed your mouth too close. Lily and Piu Piu were obviously amused by the attention that I was getting from you, and had dutifully shifted their focus from the Agogo Boy No 33 dancing on the stage (the one with a big bulge) to Agogo Boy No 28, who had now positioned himself right behind me.

“You are beautiful and pretty.” You repeated after another Agogo Boy who was standing next to you. So he is your English teacher.

“Thank you.” I said bashfully, careful to balance between being too overly overjoyed (of the undivided attention that I was getting from you) and being overly cautious (of money boys who go all way out to land their kill of the night.)

You seemed delighted with my positive response and immediately opened your arms, and locked them onto my body in a tight one-way embrace. Lily and Piu Piu watched with heightened enthusiasm as they waited in anticipation of your next move.

I stayed very still, reluctant to provide further feedback to you on my feelings. I was worried that any further actions from me would mean that I was accepting your company, which most probably would result in additional charges on top of the 200 baht that we paid for the drinks. I would pay if I can afford to, but the millions of items for sale at Chatuchak had caused a temporary loss of self-restraint earlier in the morning, leaving me with just enough cash to settle the 500 baht airport tax for the return flight tomorrow.

And so to the disappointment of Lily and Piu Piu, I continued to stay very still. My eyes longed to see you straight in the face, but I continued to stay fixated on the performance in front of me. My ears longed to hear your elementary English, but they choose to be drown in the deafening music. My mouth longed to taste your lips, but the artificial sweetness of Coke did the trick.

I thought you would leave me, but you held on nevertheless, oblivious to the countless stares of admiration from the other patrons. Throughout a good 90 minutes, your eyes continued to wander on my face, your ears listening out for every opportunity to hear my voice, your lips hovered on the back of my neck patiently awaiting mine, and your arms continued the tightening embrace on my body.

The mamasan finally came over and gently reminded me if I would like to offer him a drink.

“I did not invite him here.” I said softly to the mamasan, who promptly gave you a stare and walked away. That was perhaps the most heartless thing I have ever said to anyone in this world. Please believe me that it hurt myself as much as it would hurt you (if you understood English).

And I imagined how different things would be if I were to meet you in another setting, in another time.

You finally let go of your grasp on me to go to the washroom, but you never return. Perhaps the mamasan had given you a stern warning about wasting too much time on someone who seemed ignorant to the attention that you were showering him with.

My back began to feel the shivers. Your body most probably had shielded me previously from the direct blow of cool air from the air-conditioner behind me. Right now the void felt extra painful amidst the drowning music and cheering crowd. The copulating couple on the stage had changed into yet another difficult position of acrobatic proportions, but I don’t remember anything more.

As we were collecting money amongst ourselves to settle the bill, I saw you again, across the other side of the stage. Your other agogo friends were scrambling all over to catch hold of the last few single uncles who had stayed on after the show for some last minute ‘shopping’ spree. But you just sat there on the edge of the stage, your longing eyes fixated on me. The smile on your face had faded away, your arms were hugging your naked upper body.

“I don’t have money for you, boy. Are you for real?” I opened my mouth but acknowledged the language barrier between us. Tried looking for your English teacher but the rest had already finished up their drinks and were walking towards to the door. I left my seat reluctantly and joined them. My legs felt heavy, had to hold on to Lily for support.

And then you walked over to me, and quietly slipped a stalk of rose into my hand.

And I stopped breathing.

I would have enough air in my lungs to say “Thank you”, but I know any response from me would invite unwanted attention from the mamasan, who would most probably give you an even sterner lecture this time.

And so, with one deep breath, I pushed the door and left. I turned back to catch one last glimpse of you, but you had already disappeared behind the shutting door, you into your own world, and me into mine.

As tight as your grasp on me just one hour ago, I now held on tight to the stalk of rose from you. The petals were already shrivelling, but in my teary eyes, it was the most beautiful rose I have ever seen.

Hearts are often broken
When there are words unspoken
In your soul there's
Answers to your prayers
If you're searching for
A place you know
A familiar face
Somewhere to go
You should look inside yourself
You're halfway there
